Discover El Bucanero, a vibrant Mexican seafood destination located at 16505 Blanco Rd, San Antonio, TX 78232, United States. Known for oversized seafood plates, colorful coastal flavors, and a lively family-friendly atmosphere, this restaurant offers something distinctly different from the typical Tex-Mex experience. Guests can call +1 210-408-9297 for current menu details, takeout orders, or other inquiries.
El Bucanero in San Antonio specializes in Mexican coastal cuisine, with an extensive menu centered on shrimp, octopus, oysters, fish, ceviche, aguachiles, seafood cocktails, and molcajetes. Traditional Mexican dishes, steak options, and a dedicated kids’ selection make the restaurant accessible even when not everyone at the table wants seafood. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free choices are also available. Prices generally sit in the moderate range, although premium seafood combinations can cost more.
One of the strongest reasons to visit is the Ceviche. Fresh seafood is mixed with citrus, tomato, onion, cucumber, cilantro, and seasonings, creating a bright combination of acidity, crunch, and ocean-fresh flavor. Portions are famously generous. One customer called the Hawaiian ceviche “the best ceviche” they had eaten, while other diners consistently mention ceviche among the restaurant’s standout specialties.
Aguachiles del Rey is another memorable choice for diners who enjoy heat. Shrimp arrives in a vibrant, chile-forward preparation balanced with citrus and fresh vegetables. The mango variation adds juicy sweetness that softens the spice without removing its intensity. For those who prefer even deeper heat, the house salsa negra delivers a smoky, assertive finish.
For a dramatic main course, Molcajete El Bucanero brings together seafood and bold sauces in a sizzling stone bowl. Its combination of shrimp, fish, and other savory ingredients makes it particularly suitable for diners who want to sample several flavors in one order. Fried whole fish and bacon-wrapped shrimp are also recurring customer favorites, offering crisp textures and substantial portions.
Value here is best judged by quantity and seafood variety rather than bargain pricing. Many plates are large enough to share, which makes El Bucanero especially appealing for families and groups. Recent customer feedback remains largely positive about the extensive menu, attentive service, and flavorful seafood, although some diners report inconsistent portions or service during busy periods.
The interior reinforces the restaurant’s coastal identity with colorful artwork, distinctive booths, and playful underwater-inspired details. Live mariachi music on selected occasions adds another layer of energy. Cocktails, a full bar, parking, wheelchair accessibility, takeout, and table service make the restaurant convenient for different occasions.
Among local dining experiences, El Bucanero stands out from many of the best restaurants in San Antonio by focusing unapologetically on bold Mexican seafood. Visit hungry, explore a ceviche or aguachile, share a generous seafood platter, and enjoy a spirited taste of Mexico’s coastal cooking in the heart of San Antonio.
“ Hadn't been at this Bucanero location and I like it better than the one off 281 and Bitters. The food is very delicious . The atmosphere was great with good music and staff very attentive polite and respectful. I relay like that the kids plates included fries with every entree. Makes it easier than having to order fries on the side. My kids loved it. Definitely recommend 5/5 ”
Eva Yessenia Toledo“ One of the best Mexican seafood restaurants in the state of Texas! My wife and I make the trip from Austin to San Antonio several times a year to enjoy this wonderful seafood! You won’t be disappointed. The portion sizes are enormous & the drinks are amazing too. Great experience every time! Love love love this place! ”
Eduardo Ramos“ If you are looking for seafood with a Mexican flair this is the place for you. We ordered Molcajete El Patron. This has a variety of different seafoods and a bit expensive but definitely enough for two. Everything was super delicious. Service was great and the restaurant even though it was busy, it was great dining experience. You can order in English or Spanish and they had good Spanish music playing in the background. Seating is available inside and outside. ”
Reuben Reyes“ Ceviche is a must try! Guacamole is so fresh. They master how to decorate plates and all items tried were so fresh. I will definitely come back again. They did recently renovate restrooms. ”
Alaa Cea“ We had aguachiles, molcajete de tierra y mar, shrimp cocktail, and calamari. The portions, service, and food were all enjoyable. Would return again. :-) ”
